Temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD) might be the result of a serious jaw injury, nocturnal bruxism (grinding your teeth and clenching your jaw at night), or dental malocclusion (misaligned teeth). TMD may also be caused by a medical condition, like a growth (tumor) in the jaw joint or arthritis. For some patients, the underlying cause of their TMD may be unknown; however, if you're bothered by symptoms, you may still be diagnosed and treated for TMD. The most common symptoms of TMD are jaw pain or tenderness, lower facial muscle spasms, or feeling like your jaw is stiff or stuck. You may also experience frequent headaches, plus noises like clicking or popping when you open or close your mouth.
What to Expect
In order to diagnose you with temporomandibular joint disorder (TMD), a board-certified MINT dentist listens to your concerns about your jaw, then performs a physical exam of your jaw. Your appointment at our modern office will be comfortable and relaxing as our experienced team takes great care of you. Once you sit back in a massaging treatment chair, we'll let you wear MINT sunglasses to protect your eyes and a set of Beats headphones. You can catch up on great shows or listen to music you choose while we perform your exam. To diagnose TMD, your dentist will check how your jaw moves, visible signs of dental malocclusion and bruxism (teeth grinding and jaw clenching), as well as palpate your lower face and neck to feel if there is any swelling or tenderness. We might need a bite analysis or full-mouth series of digital x-rays to understand the cause of your TMD, which will help us customize your treatment plan. After your exam and diagnosis, your dentist will go over suggestions for your treatment, which could be orthodontics, a night guard, or a restoration like a bridge or crown.
After diagnosing your TMD, our team can suggest other methods to help you alleviate your symptoms. This may include avoiding hard foods and gum, hot compresses for your face, and techniques to help you relax. Our team can also teach you jaw-strengthening exercises, write a prescription for muscle relaxers, plus suggest medicine to reduce anxiety, inflammation, or pain. You should schedule follow-up visits as recommend, so your team can assess the effectiveness of your treatment. If you aren't getting the results you want, your dentist can discuss your other treatment options.
